BCBS Financial Policy
I am very happy to accept and continue accepting BCBS insurance plans!
Since insurance treats chiropractic a little bit differently than most other medical professions, and changes in their policies is not uncommon, I want you to be fully informed and educated on my office policy regarding these specific plans.
My goal as your chiropractor is to provide high quality chiropractic and physical therapy, in an un-rushed, unstressed environment. I give my patients my undivided attention for the full length of their visit and perform only the most effective and clinically proven techniques (hands on therapy combined focused rehab exercise instruction).
Despite negotiating with BCBS , at this point the ONLY one-on-one chiropractic services that they cover is a brief procedure called “spinal manipulation” and one “unit” of EITHER exercise instruction OR massage OR stretching. This caps doctor-patient time to about 10-15 minutes.
For a patient coming in for pain, discomfort or dysfunction, it may be difficult to make a significant impact in just a 15 minute visit. For that reason, 30 minute appointments are my standard appointment time. This allows time for thorough hands on treatment, appropriate exercise/rehab instruction, and time to ask and answer questions.
Since a 30 minute visit is not fully covered by BCBS, rather than simply stop accepting the insurance, I want to give BCBS patients an option to lengthen their visit for an additional $20. Of course this is not a perfect solution, but it does make appropriate and high quality care accessible and affordable.
(Please note, this additional $20 is only applied to follow up visits, at this time BCBS does cover the initial exam, so on your first visit your responsibility is your normal copay/coinsurance.)
Insurance related issues are confusing by nature, so if you have any questions please call me at 516-993-9582, I am very happy to explain, very happy to clarify, and very happy to continue being your provider of high quality musculoskeletal care.
Thank you!

I give my patients my undivided attention for the full length of their visit and perform only the most effective and clinically proven techniques (hands on therapy combined focused rehab exercise instruction).
Despite negotiating with Aetna, the coverage for one-on-one chiropractic services caps time I can spend with a patient time to about 15-20 minutes. This is dictated largely through their reimbursement rates, which have not increased since I began practice in 2014.
I have found that for a patient coming in for pain, discomfort or dysfunction, it may be difficult to make a significant impact in just a 15 minute visit. For that reason, 30 minute appointments are my standard appointment time. Since a 30 minute visit is not fully covered by Aetna, rather than simply stop accepting the insurance, I want to give Aetna patients an option to lengthen their visit for an additional $10. Of course this is not a perfect solution, but it does make appropriate and high quality care accessible and affordable.

Medicare
Read Medicare Policy (updated 1/1/2021)
Dr. Ben is very happy to accept Medicare and all supplements.
Since Medicare treats chiropractic a little bit differently than most other medical professions, Dr. Ben wants you to be fully informed and educated on his office policy regarding Medicare.
Medicare pays for 80% of “covered services” and usually a supplement pays for the other 20%.
The ONLY chiropractic service that Medicare “covers” is a very brief procedure called a “spinal manipulation” or an “Adjustment”.
Unfortunately, Medicare does NOT “cover”:
1. Evaluations/Exam
2. Massage
3. Stretching
4. Heat
5. Rehabilitation exercises
6. Traction
And since these are NOT “covered services” according to Medicare, your supplement will not cover them at all either.
Dr. Ben will provide you with high quality care that will likely include these “non-covered services” which, unfortunately, are not covered by Medicare or the supplement.
For that reason there is a fee for your initial visit of $50 visit and each follow up is $40. This allows Dr. Ben to continue treating Medicare patients, and also be compensated for the care that he provides.
Our medical system is far from perfect, and unfortunately the burden gets passed onto the providers and the patients. Medicare understands it is flawed in this instance.
In fact, the below is a form FROM MEDICARE, showing why chiropractors are allowed to charge for services that Medicare will not cover.
The GOOD NEWS is that there are no other limitations or stipulations. There is NO CAP on the number visits and you DO NOT NEED A REFERRAL for visits. With any questions or concerns, please call the office at 516-993-9582.
Thank you!

GHI/Emblem
Read GHI Policy Before Booking (updated 1/1/2023)
I am very happy to accept GHI/Emblem insurance!
Since insurance treats chiropractic a little bit differently than most other medical professions, I want you to be fully informed and educated on his office policy regarding this specific plan.
I aim to provide high quality chiropractic and physical therapy in my office, in an un-rushed, unstressed environment. I give patients my undivided attention for the full length of their visit and perform only the most effective and clinically proven techniques (hands on therapy combined focused rehab exercise instruction).
The ONLY one-on-one chiropractic services that GHI covers is a brief procedure called “spinal manipulation”. This is an very brief procedure taking about 3-5 minutes. As a doctor that cares about his patients, I find this short amount of time insufficient to properly treat most conditions, and I insist on more thorough treatment.
Since GHI does not cover massage, stretching, or rehab exercise instruction, I give GHI patients the option to lengthen their visit for an additional fee as seen above. Of course this is not a perfect solution, but it does make appropriate and high quality care accessible and affordable.
Insurance related issues are confusing by nature, so if you have any questions please call me at my office at 516-993-9582, he will be happy to explain anything that has not been made clear.

Dr. Ben’s Chiropractic Approach
Restoring Range of Motion
Manipulation, Adjustments, Stretching
Pain free, full range of motion is the treatment goal for the majority of cases that seek chiropractic care. Dr. Carlow works within his patients' comfort by stretching, mobilizing, and manipulating joints in the body to achieve optimal and sustainable range of motion. All treatments are administered to the patient's comfort, and never forced past tolerance. Dr. Carlow understands that many patient's do not like the "crack" and never pressures patients into receiving that type of adjustment. There are many other ways to achieve the end result of full range of motion.
Achieving Muscular Balance
Manual Therapy/ Massage / Myofascial Release:
Modalities that Dr. Carlow uses heavily in his office, understanding that muscle tone and tendon function are paramount in the healing of injuries, old and new. Tight muscles cause pain, distort posture, and perpetuate chronic symtpoms, so Dr. Carlow checks all of his patients for muscular imbalances and delivers thorough treatment to those areas.
Decrease Pain While Rehabilitating
Rehabilitation Exercises
Patients rarely leave Dr. Carlow's office without receiving some "homework" that will help to support his hands on treatment. These exercises are expertly chosen to provide maximum relief and most expedient return to normal function. It is Dr. Carlow's goal to rehabilitate all of his patients to their previous level of function, and then continue to condition their bodies as to avoid re-injury and enjoy a new level of fitness.
Scar Tissue Treatment for Smoother Movement
Graston Technique
A common barrier to full, speedy, and lasting recovery is the accumulation of scar tissue or connective tissue (fascia). This tissue can cause injuries to become chronic, cause movement to become dysfunctional, and cause muscles to feel "tight". Dr. Carlow may introduce Graston Technique as an efficient way to break up this scar tissue and release the tension and dysfunction that has resulted from it's accumulation.
Decompression of the Spine
Flexion-Distraction Table
Patients suffering from injuries in the spine find great relief with Dr. Carlow's flexion distraction table, which allows him to gently decompress the discs in the spine while also stretching the lower back muscles and joints. This table is invaluable for patients with compression related issues, both acute and chronic.
